Description

One of Ireland’s native tree species the Rowan or Mountain Ash is extremely widespread. It is steeped in folklore and was seen very much as a tree of protection and was widely planted around homes and farms to ward off evil spirits. The Rowan’s wood is strong and resilient. It makes excellent walking sticks and is well-suited for carving. It was often used for tool handles, spindles and spinning wheels. Very popular with woodturner’s, the colour contrasts between the sap and heart wood can make for very striking pieces.
