Description

Beech & Elm Lidded Box

Although not one of Irelands native tree species, Beech is extremely widespread. In Mythology it is associated with femininity and Fagus was the Celtic God of Beech trees. It can live for 200-300 years and when mature is a beautiful full canopy tree. Very susceptible to spalting which is the process of fungi growing on dead or fallen trees. The fungi travel through the dead wood cells and results in a most attractive pattern. A wonderful wood to turn and the body of this box comes from a beech tree from Abbeyknockmoy in County Galway and is fitted with an elm lid.
