Description

One of Ireland’s most traditional native trees, alders are most commonly found in damp areas, beside freshwater lakes and along riverbanks, where their strong fibrous roots help to keep the banks in place. When cut the timber is a pale colour but turns orangey red once exposed and led to the tree becoming known as the blood tree. It has been used for furniture making and is also known as Irish mahogany. It is popular with woodturners as the colour variations can produce striking pieces.
