Hi, I’m Mary, an artist specialising in watercolours, based in the stunning Inishowen peninsula of County Donegal. Living in Clonmany, I’m constantly surrounded by the beauty of my surroundings, which serves as my main inspiration for painting.
My works aim to capture the vibrancy and beauty of the Donegal landscape, often focusing on quiet, intimate, secluded places that hold a special meaning to me. Buildings and seascapes are among my favourite subjects to paint, as they evoke a sense of peace and connection with my surroundings.
Many of my landscapes are painted in my studio in Tiernasligo, which doubles as a working studio/gallery where visitors are always welcome to experience my art firsthand.
My journey as a watercolour artist began in 2012, and from the moment I picked up a paintbrush, I felt a deep sense of connection and belonging, finding immense joy in the act of painting and playing with colour.
Following a serious illness, painting became not only a source of relaxation but also a passion that transformed my life. Despite the challenges of being self-taught, including the frustration of learning each step in the watercolour process and the slow progress in drawing skills, I’ve embraced my unique journey and developed my own style.
My love for water and the sea often shines through in my work, as I find myself irresistibly drawn to painting boats, water, and beaches. The ever-changing light and atmosphere of the West of Ireland present constant challenges and opportunities for capturing the essence of my surroundings.
Whether I’m painting in my studio or sketching waves on the rocks near my home, I’m filled with a deep sense of contentment and joy. For me, painting is not just about creating art – it’s about connecting with the beauty of nature and expressing my love for the world around me.
