Hi, I’m Michael, an artist based in the beautiful town of Buncrana, Inishowen. Born in Glasgow in 1966 to Irish parents, I’ve always had a deep connection to both Scotland and Ireland. I studied Life Drawing at Glasgow School of Art and Photographic Studies at Glasgow College of Building and Printing. After spending 30 years working as a psychiatric nurse, I experienced what I like to call ‘the great reset’ when I returned to Ireland. It was here that I rediscovered my passion for art and began a new chapter in my life.
I’m fascinated by the human face and the emotions it conveys. In my previous career, I spent years observing the nuances of human expression, and this inspired me to explore portraiture more deeply. My work reflects my love for capturing truth and beauty in a single glance, and I’ve created portraits of musical legends, literary giants, Irish political figures, and world leaders who have influenced me.
From my studio in Buncrana, I create bespoke portraits from photographs, working with graphite and pastels to bring to life people’s stories and emotions. Whether it’s a cherished family member, a beloved pet, or a special moment in someone’s life, I take great pride in creating portraits that resonate deeply with the people who commission them.
In addition to portraiture, I also enjoy capturing the breathtaking land and seascapes of Inishowen in my work, showcasing iconic landmarks around Buncrana and the serene beauty of Swan Park.
Indeed, my art is all about connection – between people, places, and the stories we carry with us.
