I’m Ben Holmes – and I’m also delighted to share a bit about myself and my journey as an artist. Painting has been my passion since my school days and later studying at Winchester School of Art. But before fully diving into the world of painting, I wore many creative hats – I was an illustrator, a graphic designer, and even a printer. Each role shaped my artistic sensibilities in its own unique way.
In 2012, I made the wonderful decision to move to the awe-inspiring Inishowen Peninsula of Donegal, and it’s been my creative haven ever since. The rugged landscapes of Inishowen serve as the primary inspiration for my vibrant and colourful works. While my paintings are rooted in figurative elements, I love to infuse them with abstract touches and bold colours. It’s my way of capturing the rhythm and the ever-changing light of this stunning part of the world.
Aside from landscapes, I find joy in painting scenes of the beach and sea, as well as animals, people, and portraits. Indeed, one of my favourite collections centres around an outside public bench – including studies of folks sitting, chatting, and waiting. I delight in capturing these moments of everyday life.
Drawing has always been an essential part of my creative process. There’s something magical about those unplanned pencil marks that find their way into my preliminary sketches and ultimately become integral to the finished painting.
Over the years, I’ve also had the privilege of exhibiting my work in both Ireland and the UK. You can spot my paintings in various locations around the Inishowen area, where they add a splash of colour and joy to the surroundings. Creating art that connects with people and reflects the beauty of the world around us is truly a gift, and I’m grateful every day to be able to share my passion with others.
